Description
This buffalo cream cake recipe is handwritten on a long sheet of paper and tucked into a common place book. The recipe page as also been used to practice penmanship. Alongside this page, a receipt for the purchase of a burial plot in Geddes Cemetary, 1865. At the bottom of the recipe, the name "Aunt Frank James" is written. Beneath Aunt Frank James, "Victory Cato. Cayuga c.o. N.Y." is written in a different hand. In the same hand, "Alta James Cato" is written in the left margin.

This commonplace book has been owned by at least two different women: Mary Jane Derby and a writer named "Victory Cato" Victory has used the book to keep notes about household purchases as well as to practice penmanship though and Mary has similarly practiced her penmanship. There are several names written in the book in addition to Mary and Victory's names--Aunt Frank Cato as well as other members of Victory's family.
